1873 - When it all began

August Bilstein starts up production of window fittings in Altenvoerde, Westphalia. The products are manufactured in the foundry, and rapidly gain a reputation under the name of AUBI ( August BILSTEIN ) far beyond regional borders. A number of technical innovations are patented and form the foundation for the success of the young enterprise.

1919 - The Son Takes Up The Reins

In 1919, Hans Bilstein took over the running of the company. A steel sheet rolling mill is set up to already meet quality requirements at the initial stage of production. Hans BILSTEIN brings ideas from the United States for new methods of nickel-plating and chrome-plating to the home state of Westphalia, which the company further develops and refines.

1928 - The First Car Bumpers

In 1928, the rolling mill additionally takes up the production of car bumpers made of hot rolled spring steel. This, however, is not just a common or garden product. No, Bilstein supplies the first chrome-plated car bumper for production cars to come onto the market! Bilstein has been manufacturing car jacks since mid 1929, jacks embodying a very decisive innovation right from the start: for the first time a car can now be raised on the side.
