Trailer Hitch Pins

Hitch pins pass through the receiver hitch and the ball mount to create a secure connection between the two. Hitch pins can be basic with only a cotter pin to secure them or they can include a locking mechanism to prevent theft.

Standard trailer pins – Trailer pins will be straight with a tapered end and a locking clip or curved with a locking clip at one end. Trailer hitch pins should be sized correctly for the class of receiver in both diameter and length. Receiver tube sizes will range from 1-1/4” to 3” with pin diameters of 1⁄2” to 3⁄4”. Using too short of a pin will not allow the securing clip to be installed and too small of a diameter pin will create clearance and allow the receiver to slide forward and aft creating a “clunk” and possibly damaging the pin.

Trailer and Accessory Locks

Locking devices can be used to secure the ball mount and the trailer when not being used.

Pin Locks - Pin locks are used to hold the ball mount inside the receiver. This prevents theft of the ball mount when you are not with your vehicle.

Coupler Locks – Coupler locks physically cover the coupler and protect trailers from theft by blocking the connection of a tow vehicle.

Latch Lock – Latch locks can be anything from a padlock to a specialized lock that the limits the exposure of the locking pin to prevent cutting. A latch lock keeps the coupler latch closed so it is not possible for a tow vehicle to connect with a ball coupler.

King Pin lock - King pin locks are used to secure 5th wheel trailers and prevent unauthorized coupling. A king pin lock wraps around the trailer king pin and blocks the physical connection of a 5th wheel hitch.

Cable Locks – Cable locks are the same as what is used to secure bicycles and can be used in many ways to secure trailers or towing equipment.

By adding locking devices to trailers and receiver hitches you can discourage theft and work to protect your property. Unprotected trailers can be targeted for easy theft because they can be connected and moved very quickly with relatively little noise or activity to alert others to wrongdoing. Even the simplest locking mechanism can add a hurdle that a criminal will not want to jump over.
