SuperSpring steel helper springs are patented self-adjusting suspension stabilizers engineered for vehicles with a leaf spring rear suspension. SuperSprings by design provide users extra load capacity and additional vehicle handling and control, both without significantly hardening the ride.

The WirelessAIR (Advanced Integrated Remote) is designed for automatic digital leveling of the on-board compressor system. The WirelessAir kit includes a compressor, manifold, wiring harness, and wireless digital controller. For maximum flexibility, the system controls two air springs independently and can be used in or outside the vehicle, making it easy to make adjustments in full view of the vehicle. Tech notes:

The Driver Interface Unit (Remote) has nine push buttons that are used to activate the remote and control all system features. The Electronic Control Unit (Wireless Manifold) is a board-on-coil design incorporating onboard pressure sensors. The system communicates using 2.4GHz radio modules, with measures taken to ensure that the DIU and ECU only accept information from the unit to which they have been joined.

Due to the three valve design of the manifold, the system is not capable of simultaneous fill and dump operations on the two airbag circuits. A new setting sent to the ECU requiring both a fill and dump will be accomplished by doing the dump first followed by the fill.

Firestone Coil-Rite kits are expected to start shipping to us at the end of March, 2007. We will start shipping the day they arrive. We will update this blog if anything changes with the ship dates. 

Following is some information on the new Coil-Rite kit features and updates.

The Coil-Rite product is used as an air helper spring for certain vehicles equipped with coil spring suspensions. Most applications are for the rear suspension such as for vehicles hauling or towing heavy loads, but some are for the front suspension like trucks with snow plows or RV’s.

Applications like those mentioned above can include a wide range of environments. The extremes of hot and cold combined with highway and off-road uses can provide a design challenge. 

In order to meet the design requirements of the applications, a tough material is essential. Firestone has selected a highly durable thermoplastic elastomer that not only is flexible enough to expand and contract with the coil spring, but is also resilient to tearing and abrasion.



Another area of design that is critical is that of the air connection. A Coil-Rite must be able to be inflated and maintain a certain amount of air pressure throughout the service life of the part. This involves routing an air line that is connected to the Coil-Rite on one end and a valve on the other. In order to make installation of the air line into the Coil-Rite easier, Firestone uses a push-to-connect air fitting in the Coil-Rite. The air line is first cut off square and then simply pressed fully into the push-to-connect fitting of the Coil-Rite.

In order to further extend the service life of the part, Firestone has now incorporated a revolutionary design feature that further enhances the robustness of the push-to-connect fitting. When a Coil-Rite is inflated, the material stretches and conforms to the coil spring. Further stretching of the part occurs as the suspension moves when it encounters bumps and potholes. The new design surrounds the push-to-connect fitting with adequate material to ensure that an air-tight seal is formed. A groove is molded around the fitting area to isolate it from the stresses caused by material stretching as mentioned above. As the material stretches, the stress-relief groove can expand while protecting the seal around the air fitting. This also allows the fitting area to flex during extreme suspension travel. An additional ring of material is formed around the groove to prevent it from expanding too much. US and international patents have been filed to protect this innovative design.

The new design was first created in cyberspace using a computational tool called finite element analysis (FEA) that
simulates the inflation and movement of a Coil-Rite inside a coil spring. The stresses, (represented by various colors) could then be predicted and various designs were created and analyzed using this method.

Once the design was optimized, prototype tooling was made to produce it. Prototype Coil-Rites manufactured to the new design were subjected to several fatigue life tests where they endured over a million cycles. Tests were also performed at hot and cold temperatures to ensure acceptable performance in a variety of climates.

Firestone is introducing a new coating to be used on the Firestone Airride air spring.  The new silver coating will replace the olive and gold finishes which are found on current Air Ride air springs.  The advantage of the new silver finish: it has better corrosion resistance, and is more environmentally friendly.

The new silver finish, a trivalent chromium (III) (CR(III)) coating, will replace the olive and gold finishes,which used
Hexavalent chromium (CR(VI)) in the coating.  Consistent with the previous CR (VI) coating, the new silver CR(III) coating is plated in accordance with ASTM B 633 Type II, class Fe/Zn12, SC3 finish specification. The ASTM standard for Type II corrosion resistance is 96 hours of salt spray. Through significant research, development, and validation, Firestone has found a coating to exceed the standard expectations. Take a look at the results below:

What the ASTM Standards expect for Corrosion Resistance after 200+ hours of Salt Spray Testing

• ASTM standards state that any appearance of corrosion products visible to the unaided eye at normal reading distance, such as red rust, shall constitute rejection.
• White corrosion products shall not constitute failure.
• ASTM Type II corrosion resistant salt spray requirement: 96 hours.

Firestone's Test Conclusions:

After hundreds of hours of salt spray tests, the new silver coating met or exceeded the corrosion resistance and color retention of the former CR(VI) coatings.
