Tie Rods Ends

Tie Rods Ends

Tie rod ends use a ball and socket joint to keep the connection between the steering knuckles and allow a full range of rotation. Tie rod ends are expected to wear out over time, but frequent lubrication can greatly extend their life span. As a tie rod end wears the wheel is it associated with will no longer hold its toe adjustment. The truck may begin to pull and wear a steer axle tire.

Tie Rod Ends

Steering systems on heavy-duty trucks are a combination of multiple components, some are intended to last the life of the vehicle, and some items are meant to be replaced over time. The tie rod ends are wear-items that will need to be replaced periodically and the truck realigned. Tie rod ends play a vital role in the way that the vehicle handles. Tie rods ends can be a significant contributor to tire wear if they are worn to the point of having excessive play.

Tie rod ends are used to connect the left and right steering knuckles together while allowing the suspension to move freely. A long internally threaded tie rod bar connects the tie rod ends together and spans the width of the vehicle while the short externally threaded tie rod ends allow for travel and toe adjustment. Tie rod ends feature a tapered stud on a ball and socket type joint, this taper interfaces with a tapered pocket in the steering knuckles. The ball and socket joint will allow the tie rod ends to change angles as the left and right-side wheels are at different heights and this joint is the wear point on the tie rod end. The taper should always be able to pivot freely, but any axial play (inward and outward) and the tie rod should be immediately replaced. Replacing both tie rod ends at the same time is recommended as they will wear at close to the same rate and the truck needs to be re-aligned whether one or both sides are replaced. If you change one and pay for an alignment, it is almost a guarantee that the other side will need replacement soon after and you will have to pay for an alignment all over again.

Identifying Replacement Ends

Center to End

This measurement is the length of the tie rod end. The measurement is taken from the center of the ball socket to the ends of the threads. On tie rod ends with a central grease zirc the grease zirc can be used as the measurement point but not all tie rod ends will have a grease zirc in this location. The length of the tie rod is essential for aligning the truck once they are installed. If a tie rod end that is too short or too long is installed, it may not be possible to get the adjustment of the toe correct

Center to End Diagram

Height of taper

The height of taper measurement is taken from the minor taper, where the tapered section is the smallest, to the centerline of the ball and socket. Matching this height on the replacement tie rod end is critical to ensure that the tie rod’s total height is not too tall. If the height was too tall, it might contact the wheel on a full lock turn, and both the wheel and the tie rod could be damaged.

Tie Rod Taper Height

Taper minor and taper major diameter

These are the diameters of the smallest and largest portion of the taper. When taking this measurement, it is crucial to measure only on the taper and to avoid measuring where it is squared off at the top by the threads or the bottom by the socket. These diameters are critical to the interface between the taper of the tie rod end and the tapered pocket in the steering knuckle. If the taper diameters are not a match, it would not be possible to secure the tie rod end into the steering knuckle correctly, and this could be unsafe.

Major Taper

Threaded areas

Both the tapered stud on the tie rod and the rod itself are threaded.

• The tapered stud thread will accept a slotted nut that is locked in place with a cotter pin. A new nut and cotter pin are included with the replacement tie rod. It is a good idea to note the thread size for the tapered stud but since the replacement will contain a new nut, a change in the thread will not hurt fitment.

Stud Thread

• The threaded adjustment rod area of the tie rod end is crucial to identify as the threads will be handed (left-hand or right-hand threads), and the diameter of the threads will change depending on the application. This area needs to thread into your tie rod bar, just because a tie rod is on the left or right side does not mean it will be the coordinating thread so pay attention to what direction the tie rod end spun for removal.

Rod - Thread Pitch & Diameter

Drop

Some tie rods will not be designed on a flat plane. A dropped tie rod will have the center line of the ball and socket at a different height than the center line of the adjustment rod area. A tie rod is generally in a dropped configuration to move the tie rod bar into a position that it can clear suspension and steering components.

Tie Rod Drop

Female tie rod ends

In a limited number of configurations, a female threaded tie rod end is used. The measurements of these are basically the same aside from the threaded adjustment rod portion. Female tie rods will be internally threaded, and the tie rod bar will be externally threaded. This type of tie rod end may be used on steering assist cylinders more than actual tie rod assemblies.
