Air Tanks

Air tanks are an important component in the air systems of heavy-duty trucks, buses, and trailers. The air tanks or reservoirs store large volumes of compressed air which is used to operate the suspension, brakes, and many accessory systems. The air system on the truck allows the engine driven compressor to fill the tanks in a cycle instead of running constantly. When a trailer is connected, the truck will also be responsible for filling the trailer tanks. By having a large air volume on hand in the air tanks, the systems driven by air can react instantly instead of waiting for the compressor to catch up.

Air tanks not only provide convenience, but they provide safety through the braking system. FMVSS 121 is the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard that outlines the requirements for the air system including the volume requirements for trucks and trailers. For trucks and buses, the total reservoir volume (combined volume of primary, secondary, and supply reservoirs) should be at least 12 times the combined volume of all the service brake chambers on the vehicle. For trailers, the requirement is eight times the volume of all the service brake chambers. This allows for multiple controlled brake applications even after an air supply has been lost.

When purchasing replacement air tanks, there are a few factors to consider:

Air Tank Diameter – The diameter of the tank is important to ensuring the replacement fits in the same location, especially if the tank uses cable or straps to secure it. The diameter along with the length will determine the capacity of the tank. The capacity is listed in gallons.
Air Tank Length – The length of the air tank will determine where it will mount if it has built-in mounting brackets on the ends. Along with the diameter, this will determine the tank capacity.
Number and Location of Ports – It is important to match the number of ports and the location to avoid re-plumbing air systems when installing the replacement tank. A perfect match for the ports is ideal to avoid extra work. There should always be a port at the bottom of the tank for a drain.
Port Sizes – Port sizes will range from 1⁄4” NPT to 3⁄4” NPT and matching the port sizes will help avoid the need for adapters. It is always preferable to go up in port size and use a bushing to decrease it to avoid restricting air flow.
Mounts – Air tanks may have no mounts and be secured to a truck or trailer with straps or cables, but many tanks will include mounting feet or mounting brackets on the ends. Mounting brackets on the tank ends are in a “C” shape, and it is important to pay attention to the location of the air ports in the ends relative to the C shaped bracket.

Although air tanks are durable, the locations that they are mounted in make them vulnerable to damage and corrosion from road debris and salt. Air tanks will be coated both internally and externally to protect them from corrosion, and air tanks we carry will also meet SAE J10 requirements. SAEJ10 is a test for strength and longevity of air tanks, and it requires that they withstand twice the rated working pressure and a heated salt spray test that will prove the corrosion resistance. The Interior of the tank is scribed and must withstand 96-hour exposure to salt spray at 95° F with no corrosion spots or blisters in the coating. The exterior of the tank is scribed and must withstand 48-hour exposure to salt spray at 95° F. The heated salt spray is an accelerated test to ensure the longevity of the air tank.

Finding a match for a replacement air tank can make the job of replacing them much easier. When replacing an air tank, it is a good opportunity to evaluate and valves that may be connected to the tank and replace any that may be damaged or leaking. Replacing the tank drain valve with a new valve and pull cable will help keep the tank drained and it will give you easy access to drain it, extending the life of the tank and benefiting the air system. When replacing an air tank, valves, or drains, we have you covered at TruckSpring.com.
