What are Leaf Spring Insulators?

Leaf spring insulators are used to absorb shock and vibration on suspensions that require it. Spring insulators are typically made of rubber and they will be positioned between the leaf springs and rigid suspension components. Spring insulators are available in varying thicknesses and sizes and they should be measured before ordering or ordered using OEM part numbers.

On high capacity Mack suspensions, the camelback springs do not have spring eyes. Instead, insulators are placed above and below the leaf spring on both ends of the spring and the spring is clamped between these insulators. In some cases, this is the only rubber in the suspension besides the tires on the truck. Due to the extreme demand placed on these suspensions the amount of rubber is limited to increase the durability and the suspension capacity. Since leaf spring insulators are made from rubber, they will experience wear and tear over time. Rubber will deteriorate naturally and if exposed to oil the deterioration may be accelerated. Due to the design of Mack suspensions repairs involving the springs should be carried out identically for both sides to avoid the possibility of the axles moving out of alignment.
