Customer Q&A - Leaf Springs 55-033

Please advise on product selection.Application 39000#GVW Single axle Dump truck. Please advise on the technical difference between radius leaf vs. fore and aft control rods.. and which will provide better control function between International 31000# flat leaf with multi leaf aux. spring and "radius leaf" VS Freightliner 30000# spring suspension with "fore and aft control rods"? Thank You.

Asked
The technical difference between a radius leaf suspension and a suspension using torque rods is the device that locates the axle and maintains alignment. A radius leaf will locate the axle using a leaf as part of the spring pack. This leaf will have a bushing and a means to attach it to a solid mount on the vehicle. Aligning the axle is done with shims that move the spring forward or aft on the mount. A torque rod suspension will use 2 or more rods to locate the axle with bushings on either end. One end will mount to the axle and one will mount to the frame of the vehicle. Alignment of the axle is done with shims on the torque rods where they mount or with the torque rods themselves if they are the threaded adjustable type. On a dump truck application a torque rod type suspension would be a better choice. With the severe use a dump truck will see the torque rods are easier to replace and repair when worn or damaged. When a suspension using radius leaves is damaged it will normally require the removal of the entire spring to replace the single radius leaf.

Leaf Springs

At TruckSpring / Michigan Truck Spring, we obtain our leaf springs from various sources throughout the world. All of the manufacturers that we represent produce leaf springs that are as good as or better quality than OEM springs.

Virtually no vehicle manufacturer actually manufactures their own leaf springs. Like many other truck components, leaf springs are purchased from companies specializing in supplying parts to truck manufacturers. The springs we sell have the same or better quality as OEM springs and many times are purchased from the same manufacturer.

Leaf Springs Warranty

1 Year Limited Warranty

On all leaf springs.

What the warranty does not cover

Damage from accidents, corrosion, improper installation, incorrect applications, overloading, and custom applications that are not specified under the OEM cross references. This warranty does not cover loss of freight, loss of profit, equipment, or personal downtime. Any alteration of products will void the warranty. Warranty is void if new u-bolts are not installed when the new leaf spring is installed. Using existing u-bolts is a common cause for leaf spring breakage and failure.
