Many suspensions are designed with slipper type springs or contact overload springs. These springs will contact fixed points in the suspension as part of their design and the weight that the springs are supporting will be transferred through these fixed points to the springs. The leaf springs and the contact points will be made of steel and to preserve both pieces many suspension designs use replaceable wear pads to prevent damage to expensive suspension mounts and the springs. The wear pads will be sacrificial and meant to be replaced over time.
Wear pads may be rubber, polyurethane, or reinforced nylon. On top of preventing wear, the wear pads can help reduce friction between suspension parts and cushion the ride. Suspension wear pads are meant to be easily replaced and they should be replaced before they are worn through and the suspension components can make contact. Replacement wear pads will be dependent on the suspension that the vehicle is equipped with and they make come as a kit with attaching hardware if called for by the manufacturer.
