Proper Measurement is Required to Replace Steer Axle Camshafts

S-Cams are available for each axle type and are made in many varieties so it is essential to know the measurements of the camshaft that is being replaced. There are several key measurements of a brake camshaft. These measurements are the head size, spline diameter, spline teeth, journal diameter, axle position, rotation, and effective length. Other important information is the manufacturer, brake size and shoe type. Manufacturer, brake size and shoe type can differ greatly and can be found in the application notes of each camshaft.

Head Size

How to measure the cam head of a brake camshaft

The head size of a camshaft can be determined by measuring its width at the middle of the ‘S’.

Spline Diameter / Teeth

Spline Diameter can be measured at the point where the width of the spline teeth is at its greatest amount. This is where the camshaft couples with the slack adjuster, so it is important that the S-Cam and the slack adjuster both have the same spline diameter and number of spline teeth.

Measuring the spline diameter of a S-Cam

Rotation

The rotation of a camshaft is either left or right hand. This refers to the direction the S-Cam rotates and does not refer to the side of the vehicle the camshaft is installed on. If you are not sure of the direction of your S-Cam’s rotation, hold the cam with the head facing you. The side that is a valley indicates the direction of its rotation. That is to say if the left side curves down then it has a left hand rotation.

Journal Diameter

On some camshafts there are multiple journal measurements. The journal diameters found here refer to the diameter of the spider journal. This refers to the journal nearest to the head of the S-Cam.

Effective Length

The effective length of an S-Cam is measured from under the head to the beginning of the lock ring groove.
